What does being a teacher / trainer mean?
Job Description
What does my job mean?
I wanted to explain as I've had many people ask me over the years ''What exactly do you do?''
So in summary I have two jobs; I am a trainer of business English and I am also a teacher for students whose first language is not English.
How did you get into this profession? I moved to Spain on a gap year nearly 5 years ago and I had a cousin living in Salamanca who encouraged me to become a teacher after finding it difficult to find a stable job here. I worked in a bar and in a store for a couple of months each time and realised it weren't the professions I wanted to be in.
What did you want to be before you moved? So a subject in school I was naturally gifted in was anything related to social science. I love analysing the human brain and behaviours of people. I originally wanted to become a councillor as I love helping other people tackle problems, then I did my A levels and GCSES in Health and Social care, where I studied all aspects and did work experience in nurseries, care homes and schools for disabled children. My college tutors had links to getting us students in the NHS (I didn't agree in uni) where I ended up wanting to become a nurse or sexual health worker.
How did you become a teacher in Spain? I took a TEFL course which is done online (120 hours + 20 hours face-to-face) At that point I had a lot of free time so I became invested in learning and studying methodologies grammar, telephone teaching, controlling big groups and teaching young learners. I passed this in the August and applied for a summer camp in Tarragona Spain for the summer. I then went on to apply for 6 academic jobs back in the south of Spain and got all 6 of them but decided to join one in Murcia. Here I worked for 6 months, also in a semi-private school teaching key stage 1 of 30 students per group. I then went on to work in Alicante and San Vicente and now I work online with a company based in Madrid.
Do you do private classes? Yes I have done many private groups/classes through advertising online, students from companies wanting to go private and working with students online. I teach exam, general, conversation and business lessons.
Do you teach exams? Yes, I have a 100% pass-rate for students taking exams in Cambridge, Language Cert, TOEFL and Duolingo. I have students ranging from A1 (basic) to C1 (Advance).
How did you get into this^? I worked in a company in Alicante who basically trained me, but 99% of this was self-taught and practiced. I credit myself in knowing technics and ways to pass the exams. I can teach B1 especially blind- folded.
What do you do now? I work online with a business company and I work face-to-face in a company where I teach a similar method and exam groups.
What ages do you teach? I have literally taught every age, I have taught all the way from infants-75+
What was biggest career step? Going from being a regular teacher to being a business trainer, by sheer frustration, hard work and determination to do it.
What is a business trainer? A business trainer is like a professional coach but we coach them to perfect their English using a certain technique by drilling and putting them out of their comfort zone. Its based on everything that a person knows but using it in a way where they never break off. Imagine your a tennis player and your coach is training you physically for 12 hours a day, we are doing this with students for 1 solid hour without break (mentally). I train massive companies like Brothers inc, SGS and Velux.
Is it good pay? Now I am on very good money, especially comparing it to the cost of living here (though its a basic pay for a more affluent country) but I only work 28 hours per week with it.
What is your next step? I want to become an official teacher to natives also but its finding the time and having a good balance in my life, which right at this second I have other things that are more important.
The End Aim? To get as much professional experiences as possible for me and to one day to own my own language school in Europe that has a very open dynamic and fair approach to both my employees and students. The Aim isn't to make so much money that I am rich, but the fact I'm helping others reach goals that will only benefit their life in the long run.
